That's how many blood stem cell and marrow transplants the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) has facilitated.
To most people, it's a number. To families like ours, it's everything.
When Luke was battling AML, a bone marrow transplant represented hope. It represented more birthdays, more baseball games, more coffee dates with Mom, more snuggles with his favorite blanket, and more time with the little boy who filled every room with joy.
A stranger, someone we will likely never meet, said "yes" and became Luke's donor. In one of the hardest moments of our lives, that selfless act gave our son a chance.
Luke's transplant ultimately wasn't enough to save him, but we will forever be grateful for the gift that donor gave our family: hope.
Today, as NMDP celebrates 150,000 transplants, we honor every patient, every donor, every caregiver, every physician, and every family who has walked this road. We celebrate the lives saved and remember those we have lost.
Luke's story is the reasons Luke's Legacy Foundation exists. We believe every child deserves better treatments, more research, and a future free from cancer. We believe every family deserves hope.
